Janus Bygningen museum of art

Janus was a Roman God, protector of all beginnings. For Janus Bygningen he has become the symbol of the promotion of art that looks back in time as well as into the future.

Janus Bygningen in the town of Tistrup is an independent art gallery and museum of art. The activities in the building includes a museum of art as well as a gallery displaying works of various artists of the time. Furthermore it houses a local art society and the publishing house Hrymfaxe along with the independent entities Kunstnernes Sommerudstilling and Vestjyllandsudstillingen.

Designed by Søren Morns and opened in 2000, Janus Bygningen measures almost 9.000 square feet in total, out of which 6.000 are dedicated to exhibitions. Janus Bygningen is linked with the sports centre of Hodde-Tistrup, and the two cooperate on larger events.

The annual art show, Kunstnernes Sommerudstilling is an example of this. The museum currently features around 2.000 pieces, which are mostly modern art. The main focus is on figurative art, nordic art, art specific to western Jutland and a small collection of paintings styled in the Naïve or Primitive manner.

  • Janus Bygningen has its own library, containing around 5.000 books, magazines and catalogues about art. Every visitor has unlimited access to the reading room and its content.
  • Children from institutions or kindergartens can order a special tour.
  • Two or three times a year special exhibitions is arranged in the museum.
